Stewardship

Preserving and respecting the territory is everyone's responsibility: citizens, companies and administrations. For this reason, the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium promotes land stewardship actions with the aim of involving owners, managers and users in its conservation.

Land stewardship is a set of strategies and instruments that require the direct and active participation of civil society, on the one hand, and landowners, on the other, with the aim of conserving and making good use of the natural, landscape and cultural values of the territory.

Stewardship is implemented through voluntary, free and negotiable agreements between the entity wishing to take care of the land and the landowner. The agreements are linked to a specific property and include medium- and long-term commitments and guidelines for cooperation, depending on the objectives, type of property and possibilities of each entity.

The Serra de Tramuntana Consortium is a member of the ICTIB (Balearic Islands Land Stewardship Initiative), a network of entities whose main objective is to promote land stewardship as a tool recognised and supported by society and the administration to preserve the natural, cultural and landscape values of the Balearic Islands.

For this reason, land stewardship is included in the Consortium's annual public call for proposals. Eligible projects must have as their general objective the care, conservation or maintenance of the Serra de Tramuntana by non-profit organisations and may include tasks such as the cleaning of paths, minor repairs to ethnological elements, initiatives to raise awareness of good practices in the mountains or volunteer activities.
